Required Preparation:

  • Participants will be emailed pdfs of participant materials or will be directed to a download site.
  • Participants are responsible for printing and binding course materials.
  • Pens, pencils, and highlighers are also required.
  • For courses in this series participants are encouraged to have a computer loaded with Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher and  Minitab 19 or higher; a trial version of Minitab is available at http://www.minitab.com/en-us/products/minitab/ . Completion of Minitab Quality Trainer and/or experience with Minitab is highly recommended.
  • ​A dual monitor or dual device configuration is highly recommended to allow for real-time practice.


This 3-day, 4-hours per day webinar provides participants with a standard 8D structure and step-by-step approaches for conducting root cause analysis and permanent corrective action on problems in all areas of the organization.  Topics addressed include how to identify and prioritize problems, how to conduct root cause analysis using a combination of appropriate tools, how to develop viable solutions, and selling and implementing the solutions.  The program is designed for all functions and levels of the organization, from management, marketing, sales, purchasing, and administration to design, manufacturing, quality, and technical services. 


Recommended Resources:

  • Participants are responsible for obtaining and bringing their own copies of the related AS standards to class for reference purposes; RM13000 and RM13010 and related standards are referenced, and reference materials are provided in the course materials.
  • Participants are also encouraged to bring a notebook or laptop computer loaded with Microsoft Excel 2010 or higher and  Minitab 16 or higher; a computer is not mandatory but is highly recommended to be able to participate in classroom exercises. A trial version of Minitab is available at http://www.minitab.com/en-us/products/minitab/ .

  • The 8 disciplines or steps in the 8D process and required AS13000 reporting format
  • How to prioritize and define problems
  • How to use a structured, repeatable approach based on the 8D methodology
  • How to conduct thorough root cause analysis (RCA)
  • Use 5-why analysis with other quality and engineering tools
  • Develop potential solutions and build consensus
  • Implement solutions using the traditional PDCA approach
  • Consider human factors related root causes and implement appropriate mitigations
  • How to  implement effective poka yoke, error proofing, and mistake proofing solutions
  • Ensure that the solution and the problem solving process are effective
  • How to calculate and demonstrate Cost of Non-Conformance, Cost of Waste, and Return on Investment


NOTE: This workshop will not focus on RM13004 related tools including PFD, PFMEA, and Control Plan, which are covered in a separate workshop.
